‌A clear sampling brief helps your supplier understand what you want to approve. For a custom muslin blanket, record the fabric, finished size, artwork, quantity split and packaging before requesting a development sample. Keep the same brief with your quotation so that you can compare offers against the same specification.

Define the product and fabric

Describe the product you are developing, its intended customer and the market where you plan to sell it. Include a reference photo if it helps explain the appearance, but identify which details you want to keep or change.

Record the requested fibre composition, fabric construction, layer count and finished fabric weight where known. If you have only a physical reference, ask the supplier to propose a specification for review. Request clarification on how layers are counted and whether the weight refers to a single fabric layer or the complete construction. Keep unanswered fields visible instead of filling them with assumptions.

If you are still comparing materials, read our baby blanket fabric sourcing guide before finalising the brief.

Agree on how size will be measured

State the target finished dimensions and ask whether the quoted size is measured before washing or after the agreed care process. Record the measurement method and acceptable tolerance with the supplier. This gives both sides a common reference when reviewing a textured muslin sample.

For your sample review, record length and width before and after the agreed wash and drying process. Note the conditions used and photograph the result. Ask the supplier to explain any difference from the agreed target before you approve the next stage.

Prepare artwork at the intended scale

Send the artwork version, intended repeat size, print direction and colour references. Include a placement sketch for borders, labels or motifs that need a specific position. Ask the supplier which file format and resolution they need for the proposed process.

Request a physical print reference when colour and detail are important to your collection. Identify the areas you will review, such as fine outlines, background colour and repeat joins. Record which physical reference will guide approval, since a screen preview is only part of the discussion.

Split the quantity by design

Show the estimated quantity for each print, colour and size. Ask the supplier to confirm minimum quantities for each relevant option, plus any separate packaging minimum. A total collection quantity alone may leave the quotation unclear. Request that sampling, artwork preparation and packaging costs be identified separately where applicable.

Include the edge labels and packaging

Specify the preferred edge finish and show where each label should sit. Provide label artwork and dimensions for review. If you have a packaging concept, include the proposed pack contents and folding method. Explore our printed cotton muslin blanket for a product reference when preparing your brief.

Ask for a packing check using the agreed sample before finalising box dimensions or printed packaging artwork. Confirm the folded size, label visibility and how the product will be presented when opened. If packaging is still undecided, ask for it to remain a separate quotation item.

Review each sample against one written record

Give every sample a reference number and date. Record the fabric reference, artwork version, dimensions and packaging version alongside it. Group your feedback by component so the supplier can identify exactly what needs to change.

During review, check the overall hand feel, print appearance, edge finish and label placement against your brief. Record wash observations using the agreed process. Photographs help explain visible issues, while a retained physical sample provides a shared reference for texture and colour.

Finish your feedback with a clear status: approved as submitted, revision required, or awaiting additional information. If you approve only part of a sample, name that component. Ask the supplier to acknowledge the latest revision list before proceeding. Agree separately on any further approval needed before bulk production.

Send a brief that can support a quotation

Your initial enquiry should include the following information:

  1. Product description and target market
  2. Requested composition and construction or a reference sample
  3. Finished size and measurement conditions
  4. Artwork and quantity split by print colour and size
  5. Edge finish labels and packaging preferences
  6. Required arrival date and delivery destination
  7. Sample review priorities and any buyer documentation requirements

If a detail is undecided, mark it as open and explain what you need help choosing. Ask the supplier to list assumptions and exclusions in the quotation, together with the proposed sampling steps. This makes it easier to see which decisions could change the price or schedule.
